Laser hair removal works by sending a beam of laser light to a group of hair follicles with enough power to disable or destroy the root, but not enough power to harm the surrounding skin. It is selective because it targets only the hair and not the skin. The surrounding skin is usually cooled. Some methods include a gel, a spray, or a cooling tip. Laser hair removal is an FDA approved method for permanent hair reduction. The process is simple and can be done over lunch and is less painful than alternative treatments.
Since the laser affects hair follicles only when they are in the growth phase, more than one treatment may be necessary to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter the growth phase. Successive treatments are generally spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. During your consultation you will be advised as to the approximate number of treatment required. Side effects are rare. Some parts of the body do tend to be more sensitive than others and sometimes redness occurs for a few hours afterwards. You must limit your sun exposure for 2-4 weeks before and after treatment. This will greatly minimize the risk of unnecessary side effects.
